Job Description
Are you a visionary Senior Mechanical Engineer ready to design the next generation of robotic and automated manufacturing systems? Apex Automation Solutions is seeking an innovative, hands-on mechanical designer to join our world-class engineering team in Detroit, MI.
In this role, you will lead the full product development lifecycle—from conceptualization and FEA analysis to physical prototyping and final production release. You will work alongside cross-functional teams of electrical, software, and control engineers to deliver state-of-the-art robotic systems that solve complex industrial challenges. This is an exceptional opportunity to accelerate your career within a high-growth sector of advanced engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design and development of complex robotic systems, end-of-arm tooling, and automated machinery using SolidWorks.
- Perform structural, thermal, and kinematic analyses (FEA) to validate design integrity, performance, and reliability.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure precise fit, form, and function of manufactured components.
- Collaborate closely with control systems and electrical engineering teams to seamlessly integrate hardware and software components.
- Manage the fabrication, assembly, and testing of physical prototypes, analyzing failure modes and implementing design improvements.
- Coordinate with external manufacturing partners and suppliers to source high-quality components and optimize designs for manufacturability (DFM).
- Generate and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs) and technical specifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) required; Master's degree is a plus.
- 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical design, specifically focusing on robotics, industrial automation, or precision machinery.
- Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (SolidWorks preferred) and PDM system workflows.
- Strong working knowledge of FEA simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation) and detailed GD&T application (ASME Y14.5).
- Demonstrated experience in designing for diverse manufacturing processes (CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and 3D printing).
- Proven track record of managing engineering projects from initial design concept to successful deployment on the production floor.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
