Responsibilities
- Assign accurate ICD-10 and CPT codes to medical records and inpatient/outpatient services to ensure proper reimbursement.
- Perform regular audits of coding documentation to identify errors, trends, and opportunities for revenue improvement.
- Ensure strict compliance with HIPAA regulations, CMS guidelines, and hospital internal policies.
- Analyze claim denials and develop strategies for successful appeal and resubmission.
- Collaborate with physicians and clinical staff to clarify ambiguous documentation and resolve coding queries.
- Stay current with coding updates, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.
- Train and mentor junior coding staff and students entering the healthcare information technology field.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a hospital or multi-specialty clinic setting.
- Certification required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P (or equivalent active credentials).
- Deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex clinical data.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines during reporting periods.
