Responsibilities
- Review medical records and physician documentation to assign accurate ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS codes in accordance with AHA and AMA guidelines.
- Conduct regular chart audits and resolve discrepancies to ensure 100% compliance with payer requirements and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate directly with healthcare providers to clarify clinical documentation and resolve complex coding queries.
- Ensure strict adherence to HIPAA regulations and internal compliance policies regarding patient data privacy.
- Analyze coding trends and claim denials to identify process improvements for the revenue cycle team.
- Provide mentorship and training to junior coders and medical records staff to ensure departmental excellence.
- Stay updated on changes in healthcare legislation, coding updates, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
- Certification as RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC, or CCS-P required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in medical coding within a hospital or multi-specialty physician practice setting.
- Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Strong understanding of healthcare compliance, HIPAA, and medical terminology.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software (e.g., 3M Encoder, Epic, or Cerner).
- Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while meeting tight deadlines.
