Responsibilities
- Assign appropriate medical codes (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS) to patient records for billing and reporting purposes.
- Perform regular audits of medical records to ensure compliance with coding guidelines and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with physicians and clinical staff to resolve documentation queries and clarify ambiguous medical information.
- Monitor trends in coding patterns to identify opportunities for process improvement.
- Stay current with changes in healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and CMS updates.
- Train junior coders and provide mentorship within the revenue cycle department.
Qualifications
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification is preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a hospital or large clinic setting.
- Proficient in the use of electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Exceptional attention to detail and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
