Responsibilities
- Assign accurate ICD-10 and CPT-10 codes based on clinical documentation provided by providers.
- Conduct regular audits of medical records to ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and payer guidelines.
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) specialists and physicians to clarify complex cases and enhance documentation accuracy.
- Mentor junior coding staff, providing guidance on coding updates, denials, and best practices.
- Identify trends in coding denials and implement strategies to reduce revenue leakage.
- Stay current with evolving coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in hospital or physician-based medical coding.
- Proficiency in medical coding software such as Epic, Cerner, or Allscripts.
- Strong knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and private payer billing guidelines.
- Excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clinical staff and administration.
