Responsibilities
- Assign Medical Codes: Accurately assign ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes to medical records based on physician documentation.
- Clinical Documentation Integrity: Review and analyze clinical documentation to ensure it supports the assigned codes and meets regulatory standards.
- HIPAA Compliance: Adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations and internal privacy policies to protect patient confidentiality.
- Process Improvement: Identify trends in coding patterns and recommend improvements to enhance revenue cycle efficiency.
- Collaboration: Work closely with physicians and clinical staff to resolve documentation queries and clarify ambiguous records.
- Auditing: Conduct regular audits of coding records to ensure accuracy and compliance with CMS and payer guidelines.
- Continuous Learning: Stay current with the latest coding updates, guidelines, and regulatory changes in the healthcare landscape.
Qualifications
- Certification: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC certification is required.
- Experience: Minimum of 4-6 years of progressive experience in medical coding, preferably in an acute care or hospital setting.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Allscripts.
- Attention to Detail: Exceptional analytical skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy in high-volume data entry.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with clinical staff.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of CMS guidelines, NCCI edits, and payer-specific policies.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred.
