Responsibilities
- Oversee the accurate coding and abstraction of medical records using ICD-10 and CPT guidelines to ensure proper reimbursement and data integrity.
- Perform regular audits of medical documentation to identify gaps, ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations, and recommend process improvements.
- Train and mentor junior coding staff and healthcare providers on proper documentation practices and coding updates.
- Manage the maintenance of the Master Patient Index (MPI) and ensure the accuracy of patient demographics across all systems.
- Analyze complex coding scenarios and collaborate with clinical staff to resolve documentation queries.
- Stay current with evolving healthcare regulations, CMS updates, and coding guidelines to ensure organizational compliance.
- Generate and analyze reports regarding coding productivity, claim denials, and compliance trends.
Qualifications
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in health information management, medical coding, or revenue cycle management.
- Strong working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Proven experience in conducting chart audits and ensuring HIPAA compliance.
- Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.
- Strong communication skills, capable of educating staff on documentation requirements.
